Thursday, March 14, 2013 - 1:00pm

The UTEP softball team will travel to Mississippi to play in the Jackson State Tournament this weekend. The Miners (7-11) will take on Cleveland State (1 p.m. MT) and Mississippi Valley State (5 p.m. MT) on Friday.

The Miners are coming off a heartbreak loss to Memphis, 6-5, on March 10. Four runs were scored in the sixth inning that put UTEP ahead, but the Tigers scored two in the seventh to claim victory.

Freshman Kawehiokalani Netane leads the Orange and Blue with a .378 batting average and 12 runs. Senior Kayla Oranger leads the team in hits (18) and stolen bases (seven), while junior Alanna Leasau has 16 RBI and has doubled four times, which is tied with Netane. Senior Kayleigh Walts and Leasau have combined for six of UTEP’s nine home runs. Junior Colleen Hohman and freshman Danielle Pearson have combined for six wins and 99 innings in the circle. Hohman has fanned 44 hitters and has two complete games thus far.

Cleveland State is coming off a loss to Oklahoma State, 10-1, and has won only five of its first 14 games in 2013. The Vikings have gone deep 11 times, while Erica McNew leads the team with four. Dara Toman is hitting .359 with six doubles and Alyson Broschk has 10 RBI to lead her squad. Susan Knight is 4-3 with a 2.40 ERA and six complete games on the rubber.

The Miners will return to Conference USA action on March 23 when they play Southern Miss. in Hattiesburg.
