Thursday, October 7, 2010 - 2:36pm

EL PASO – The UTEP softball squad has been named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Academic Team for the 2009-2010 academic year. In addition, six Miners were individually honored as NFCA Scholar Athletes.

“James and I are very proud of our team’s latest accomplishment,” co-head coach Kathleen Rodriguez said. “We believe very strongly in the philosophy in which we are building a strong “family” atmosphere. UTEP softball tries to create an atmosphere where we expect nothing but hard work, dedication and commitment from one another.”

UTEP was ranked no. 34 of 132 Division I programs with a team GPA of 3.337. Ashley Collazo, Jessica Villanueva, Kayla Oranger, Kayleigh Walts, Kelynn Frye and Stacie Townsend received individual honors scholar athlete honors by the association.

“Along with this family atmosphere comes the ideal in which we are building a well-rounded woman,” Rodriguez added. “We believe in the importance of serving the El Paso community and making a strong connection with the people that support UTEP softball daily. Included in the well-rounded woman ideal is the fact that we demand excellence in the classroom. We expect our women to step out of UTEP with all the needed tools to become successful, contributing members of society.”

The girls got game Academic Awards program honors both collegiate and high school teams for their submitted GPAs for the 2009-2010 academic year. As a second component of the program, all submitted student-athletes who achieved a 3.50 GPA during last academic year are named as girls got game/NFCA Scholar Athletes.

The UTEP softball program was the top-ranked Conference USA school named on the NFCA’s list. Marshall was 39th, UAB was 74th and East Carolina was 87th.
