UTEP Softball Falls Again to Memphis
Memphis hit six home runs to take game three and sweep the UTEP softball team in the three-game series wit a 15-6 win over the Miners on Sunday afternoon at the Helen of Troy Complex.
The Tigers opened up the game with a dinger by leadoff Heather Mott. Pitcher Courtney Auger awarded first on balls to Lelani Bernardino before Maddie McKinley’s two-RBI bomb out of the right field fence put Memphis up 3-0. McKinley homered again in the second and the visiting squad was up 6-0 in the top of the second.
UTEP got on the board when, with bases loaded, Carly Hummel advanced Becky Smith to first on a hit-by-pitch. The Miners scored again in the next stanza on Kayla Oranger’s base hit that brought Chelsea Troupe home to make the score 8-2.
With a new pitcher in the circle to begin the bottom of the frame, Smith drew her second walk of the day and scored on Kayleigh Walts’ infield single. The Tigers’ shortstop overthrew to first giving Smith the opportunity to score and advance Walts to third. The sophomore added the Miners’ fourth run of the day on Courtney Ware’s groundout.
Memphis scored one run in the fifth and the Miners appeared to figure out Tigers’ pitcher Janelle Valle in the bottom of the frame scoring two off of freshman Camille Herrera’s two-RBI long ball to cut the lead 9-6.
The Tigers scored five more in the top of the sixth before calling the game with two outs into the inning. The game was called in order to allow Memphis to catch a flight back home.
UTEP will be back in action this Tuesday against New Mexico for a doubleheader at home scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
