UTEP Softball Beats Siena, 3-1

Sports
Tuesday, March 26, 2013 - 9:48pm

After an emergency shut the UTEP campus down, the UTEP softball team shut down Siena, 3-1, at the Helen of Troy Softball Field on a breezy, clear Tuesday night.

The Miners (11-15) got a key defensive play from junior right fielder Kayla Black in the top third. The Saints (5-14) loaded the bases with two outs when Shannon Jones reached first on a fielding miscue. Jessica-Jo Sandrini, the team leader in RBI, then hit a shallow ball to right field but Black scampered down and made an incredible diving catch to keep the game scoreless.

After the great play by Black, senior Kayla Oranger got the Orange and Blue going with a two-out walk in the bottom half of the inning.Junior Erika Arcuri singled up the middle with one of her two hits, and then a wild pitch advanced Oranger to third and then home on an error with senior Kayleigh Walts in the batters box. Walts then singled to the short stop that brought Arcuri across home plate, giving UTEP a 2-0 lead.

The Saints scored a run in the top fourth, but that was all as freshman Danielle Pearson (6-6) finished the game in the circle, in which she allowed one hit and no walks in three innings of work. Black added an insurance run when she advanced freshman Kawehiokalani Netane home on a sac-bunt. The Saints put two in scoring position in the top of the seventh but Sandrini grounded out to third base to end the contest.

The Miners and Saints will continue with a doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game is slated for a 1 p.m. MT start.
