After receiving votes for the past few weeks, the UTEP soccer team has broken into the NCAA Central Region rankings. The Miners (7-2) checked in ninth in the most-recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Central Region poll.

It marks the ninth straight year and 10th campaign overall during head coach Kevin Cross’ tenure that the Orange and Blue have been so honored.

“We’re very honored that the soccer coaches ranked us in the top 10 in the highly-competitive Central Region,” Cross said. “We know this ranking is a great honor but we have to win some very important road matches in Conference USA this week to retain this ranking.”

UTEP split its first two matches of the season before winning three straight and six of seven. The Miners defeated three defending league champions during non-league play and also stayed perfect in the Battle of I-10 with a victory at NM State, 2-1, on Sept. 12.

For fans of the Miners, the great start to the season should come as no surprise. It marks the ninth time under Cross that UTEP has opened up with a record of at least 7-2-0.

UTEP, which has been idle for more than a week, resumes play when it christens Conference USA action at East Carolina at 5 p.m. MT Friday. The match will be the first of four straight on the road to kick off league play for the Miners, who will also play at Marshall (11 a.m. MT, Sunday), at SMU (6 p.m. MT, Sept. 28) and at Tulsa (1 p.m. MT, Sept. 30) before returning to the friendly confines of University Field.
