UTEP Rifle Falls in Season Opening Match
The UTEP rifle team fell toJacksonville State and Nevada this weekend in the opening match of the season.
The Miners finished with an aggregate score of 4496, firing 2266 in air rifle and 2230 in smallbore.
Sophomore Jennifer Armendariz was UTEP’s top shooter in air rifle match posting 588, tying Cole Tucker of the Jacksonville State’s men’s team.
UTEP’s Hannah Muegge registered 587 and junior Korina Hernandez started her season off strong by recording 575. Junior Areli Oros was not far behind, posting 532 in the air rifle.
“Jenny (Armendariz) shot a solid air rifle and Korina was rock solid,” head coach George Brenzovich said. “This match will be a year characterized of growth and achievement.”
The smallbore competition went to JSU’s Monica Fyfe with a 582. Muegge came in third in the smallbore competition with a 579. Hernandez posted a smallbore score of 572 with Armendariz just behind her with 568. Oros marked a 529 in her career debut in the smallbore competition.
JSU claimed three of the top five spots in both competitions, giving the Gamecocks a 4648 win in the triangular that included Nevada. The Wolfpack came in second with 4606.
The Miners continue on the road next Saturday, October 20, against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
