UTEP Raids the Motor City For Another Top-100 High School Prospect

UTEP Raids the Motor City For Another Top-100 High School Prospect

Friday, November 23, 2012 - 2:49pm

UTEP put the finishing touches on its list of November basketball signees Friday with the announcement that top-100 player Vince Hunter has inked an NLI to play for the Miners.

The 6-8, 200-pound Hunter is listed as the no. 98 high school prospect in the country by Rivals.com. He is rated a four-star recruit and the no. 19 small forward in the country. Scout.com lists him as a four-star recruit, as well as the no. 24 power forward and the no. 7 player in Michigan. He is charted the no. 27 small forward and the no. 4 player in Michigan by 247sports.com.

He was a teammate of the Miners’ 7-1 freshman center Matt Willms at Consortium High School in Detroit during the 2010-11 season. Willms is redshirting this year.

“The biggest thing that stands out about Vince is his motor. He’s one of the hardest playing guys that we saw in the country this summer,” UTEP coach Tim Floyd said. “He is an elite level athlete with a developing skill level and a big-time competitor. He goes over, around and through guys to score and get rebounds. He’s a power wing.

“We feel like he’s a critical piece of this class. We have tried to build a team similar to what we had at USC with multiple ball handlers, defenders who can guard four different spots, and high skill level guys that can dribble, pass and shoot. We will now have the ability to play two players at the same position together. He has the kind of toughness that you can take on the road and win games with.”

A three-year varsity starter, Hunter averaged 23 points, 11 rebounds and three steals last season. He was a first team Class C All-State honoree and a second team All-City selection for a squad that finished 20-5 and lost in the regional finals of the state tournament.

Hunter averaged 19 points, eight rebounds and five steals as a sophomore, when he was second team Class C All-State and third team All-City for a 24-4 club.

He is expected to be a finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan as a senior.

“UTEP is getting a very athletic, long wing guy who can get up and down the court with the skill to put the ball on the floor,” said Detroit Consortium coach Al Anderson. “He has a very nice mid-range game. He handles the ball very well. He’s going to be a presence on defense with his long wingspan. If they want to play pressure D [at UTEP], he’s going to fit right in.”
