UTEP Punter Campbell Named to Ray Guy Watch List
UTEP football’s Ian Campbell was named to the 2012 Ray Guy Award Watch List announced the Augusta Sports Council on Wednesday.
A Ray Guy Award semifinalist last season, Campbell ranked fourth nationally and first in C-USA in punting with an average of 46.1 yards, kicking 48 times for a total of 2,214 yards.
Tabbed second team All-Conference USA selection, the California native had 18 punts covering 50+ yards and averaged at least 50+ yards in three games and registered as many punts fair caught (six) as have gone for touchbacks (six). He boomed 16 punts inside the 20-yard line and kicked a season-best 71-yard punt versus Stony Brook.
The Ray Guy Award winner is determined by a national voting body that include sports writers, college coaches, sports information directors and past Ray Guy Award winners. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times a punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage, and percentage of punts not returned. The voters will take note of statistics as well as the display of team leadership, self-discipline and impact on the team’s success.
