MIners Close To A Decision
UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull is close to naming a new head basketball coach and apparently both Billy Gillispie and Tim Floyd are no long in the mix.
Move over Tim and Billy. Randall may be the new favorite.
UTEP officials spent the weekend interviewing candidates in Dallas. Floyd was the early front runner for the position, "but it became apparent we could not match up," said one University official citing differences in money, location and length of contract. "The NCAA inverstigation was not a factor, and I suppose the talks could be resumed but right now I think Stull is moving in another direction," said the same UTEP contact.
Floyd was a fan favorite as assisant coach to Don Haskins in the '80s with head coaching exprience in both the NCAA and NBA. He left Southern Cal last spring with the threat of NCAA probation involving the possible illegal recruitment of O.J. Mayo.
Gillispie never got a face to face interview but did talk with UTEP officials in a brief phone conversation.
Who is now the front runner?
The Miners may look inward and keep assistant coach Randall Dickey. A long shot at the start of the interview process, the Arkansas native impressed UTEP officials with his knowledge and future plans for the progam.
NewsChannel 9 phone calls to Dickey were not returned.
