UTEP Men's Track Team Leads the Way at C-USA Championships

After day one of the 2013 Conference USA Indoor Championships, the men’s team leads the competition with 47 points at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

Anthony Rotich blew past the competition claiming gold in the men’s 5,000m clocking in a time of 14:17.43.

Teammate Elphas Maiyo ran in the 5,000m for the first time this season and posted a time of 14:44.70, helping UTEP earn some additional points in the first day of the championships.

Two Miners made it to the podium in the men’s long jump. Mark Jackson claimed the gold medal with a leap of 7.54m (24-09.00). Senior Donovant Grant earn bronze with a jump of 7.34m (24-01.00) registered in his final attempt of the night.

Demetris Elia was the first Miner on the men’s team to take the field on Saturday and put UTEP at a good starting point. The sophomore registered a toss of 17.94m (58-10.25) securing the bronze medal in the weight throw.

In the men’s high jump the third place medal came down to a tiebreak that would favor the Miners. Xavier Baker earned the bronze medal with a mark of 2.01m (6-07.00).

The Miners ended the nigh with the distance medley relay, ran by Anthony Rotich, A-Shawni Mitchell, Daniel Tarango and Elkana Rotich. The squad finished in second place posting a time of 9:56.83.

In the 60m dash prelims both Miners advanced to the finals scheduled for tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. (MT). Mark finished third overall recording a season best of 6.72, while Anthony Wright took the final spot in the finals with a time of 6.89.

Also qualifying to the finals is Abiola Onakoya, who earned a spot in the 400m dash set to begin at 2:30 p.m. The sophomore finished first in his heat crossing the finish line with a time of 48.35.

As the men wrapped up the sprinting events for the day Kyron Joseph punches his ticket to the finals in the 200m posting a season-best time 21.83.

On the women’s side Jallycia Pearson was the only Miner to participate in the pentathlon where she finished sixth overall. The sophomore took third in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.78 and went on to claim third in the shot put with a toss of 11.35m (37-03.00).

Three Miners earn spots in the 60m hurdle finals on the first day of competition at the C-USA Championships. Leading the pack was Janice Jackson, who sits in the No. 2 spot with a time of 8.32.

Freshman Brianna McGhee barley missed her season high by a second with a time of 8.47. Senior Samantha Sharper registered a season best of 8.55 currently ranked seventh heading into the finals tomorrow.
