The UTEP men’s golf team shot a season-low 865 – its best score in three years -- to tie for third place at the Jim West Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Victoria, Texas.

The Miners logged rounds of 295, 287 and 283. UTEP’s previous best total in a tournament was 842 at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic April 6-7, 2009 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Two freshmen finished in the top-20 of the individual standings to lead UTEP. Martin Simonsen tied for fifth place, carding a four-under-par 212 (72-67-73). Simonsen has been the Miners’ top finisher in four of six tournaments since making his debut at the Arizona Intercollegiate in late January.

Simonsen finished five strokes back of individual champion Mitchell McLeroy of Stephen F. Austin State (207).

Jere Pelletier was the other UTEP freshman in the top 20, shooting 216 (74-76-66) to tie for 12th place. Pelletier’s 66 on Tuesday marked the low round by a UTEP player this year. Luke Ovenden tied for 26th place (76-69-75-220), Devin Miertschin tied for 40th place (73-78-72-223) and Jerry Castrellon tied for 60th place (87-75-72-234). The Miners’ David Persons, competing as an individual, tied for 38th place (74-76-72-222).

Sam Houston State was champion of the 12-team event (290-287-274-851).

UTEP will next compete at the Conference USA Championship April 22-24 in Texarkana, Texas.
