The UTEP men’s golf team finished 11th in its first tournament of the spring, the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Tucson.

The Miners carded rounds of 301, 293 and 300 for a total of 894. New Mexico headed up a 15-team field that included three top-25 teams, shooting 844 (285-278-281).

“We didn’t play like we would like to this week,” UTEP coach Scott Lieberwirth said. “We wanted to get off to a better start than we did early in the season. There’s too much rust at this point in time. Hopefully in the next few weeks we can sharpen our game.”

The fifth-ranked Lobos edged runner-up TCU (280-282-284-846) and the nation’s no. 1 team, California, which snagged third place (281-284-282-847).

California’s Michael Kim (70-69-65-204) and Joel Stalter (65-69-70-204) tied for first place among individuals.

UTEP’s Martin Simonsen tied for 28th place with a seven-over-par 220 (76-69-75). Jere Pelletier tied for 39th place (76-73-73-222), Devin Miertschin tied for 45th place (74-75-74-223) and David Persons tied for 71st place (76-76-78-230). Jacob Loya (76-81-77-234) and Luke Ovenden (75-78-81-234) tied for 78th place.

The Miners will next compete at the John Burns Intercollegiate Feb. 20-22 in Kahuku, Hawaii.
