UTEP Men’s Basketball Conference USA Schedule Finalized
The UTEP men’s basketball team will open its 16-game Conference USA slate at Marshall on Jan. 4, and face Houston in the league home opener on Jan. 7. The Miners will also meet East Carolina, Rice, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, Southern Miss and UAB in the Haskins Center this winter, leading up to the Conference USA Championship March 7-10 at the FedExForum in Memphis.
UTEP, 25-10 last season and 11-5 in C-USA play, will face East Carolina, Marshall, Memphis, Southern Miss, UAB and UCF once each this year. The Miners have two games scheduled versus Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa. For the second straight year, UTEP will conclude the C-USA regular season schedule at SMU (March 3).
The Miners are 7-0 against Marshall since joining Conference USA for the 2005-06 season, but will have their hands full in the league opener against a Herd team that was 22-12 last season and returns three starters. UTEP will return home and take on a Houston squad that it has beaten nine of 10 times in El Paso.
Following a Jan. 11 road date with Tulsa, the Miners will be home for back-to-back league games against SMU (Jan. 14) and East Carolina (Jan. 18). They will then play three straight C-USA road games for the second time, and the first time since January of 2008. UTEP will play at Tulane on Jan. 21, at Houston on Jan. 28 and at Rice on Feb. 1.
The Miners will have a season-long three-game C-USA homestand versus UAB (Feb. 4), Tulsa (Feb. 8) and Tulane (Feb. 11). UAB won the league’s regular season crown a year ago, and Tulsa tied the Miners for second place.
On Feb. 18, UTEP will take on Memphis at the FedExForum in a rematch of last season’s C-USA title game participants. With 13 players returning from last year’s NCAA Tournament participant, the Tigers are the preseason league favorite.
The Miners will alternate home and road games the rest of the way, hosting Southern Miss (Feb. 22) and Rice (Feb. 29) and playing at UCF (Feb. 25) and SMU (March 3).
The Miners return three letterwinners (sophomore center John Bohannon, senior forward Gabriel McCulley, sophomore guard Michael Perez) and one starter (McCulley) this season while introducing a host of new players, including seven freshmen. UTEP is embarking on its second year under the direction of coach Tim Floyd.
Game times will be determined once the Conference USA national television schedule has been set. Season tickets are on sale now by calling (915) 747-6150.
