UTEP Lands Point Guard in Josh Brown

Sports

POSTED: Thursday, November 22, 2012 - 7:12pm

UPDATED: Thursday, November 22, 2012 - 11:43pm

UTEP has bolstered its backcourt for the 2013-14 season with the signing of lightning-quick California point guard Josh Brown to a national letter of intent.

“Josh is a true point guard who can defend players at his position with extreme speed and quickness,” UTEP coach Tim Floyd said. “You have to have that dimension on your team. He has the ability to get by most any guard in the country, and he can handle the ball. When we saw him play he lived in the lane, creating plays for others, but his strength allowed him to finish. We also like his ability to make the three point shot, which has become such a big part of college basketball.”

The 5-10, 175-pound Brown transferred to Cathedral High School in Los Angeles for the 2012-13 season. His coach is William Middlebrooks, who spent the previous seven years at Ribet Academy where he won two CIF championships. The assistant coach at Cathedral is Will Kimble, who played for the Miners from 2004-06.

Brown played at Blair High School in Pasadena, Calif. from 2010-12 for coach Eric Kinley.

As a junior last season, Brown averaged 14.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals and earned first team All-Rio Hondo League honors. He scored his season-high 26 points twice, against Valley View HS and San Marino HS. He also had 10 assists in one game and eight steals in another, with a near triple-double (16 points/10 boards/seven steals) versus Paloma Valley HS.

“He was a seriously off-the-radar player that people should have known about but didn’t,” said coach Middlebrooks. “He’s a big time guard that can really break guys down off the dribble and go to the rack and score. He has a great mid-range shot and can also hit deep threes. He has a really good all-around game. He can defend 94 feet. He has a very quick first step offensively and can really turn guys defensively. More importantly, he has a great personality. He’s a high character kid from a great family and will be a great addition to the UTEP community.”
