UTEP Freshman Named All-American

Sports

POSTED: Saturday, June 9, 2012 - 5:25pm

UPDATED: Saturday, June 9, 2012 - 11:14pm

Freshman Anthony Rotich finished sixth in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium, Saturday morning.

“I am very happy on the transition Anthony Rotich has done in this short period of time,” said associate head coach Paul Ereng. “Rotich is a hard worker, who always wants to do better when he steps on the track. As a freshman, he comes close to marching Patrick Mutai, who finished fifth in this event as a freshman.”

Rotich fell to the back of the pack at the beginning of the race, but he quickly found his pace and began to pull away. The freshman was in the top five for more than half of the race and remained with the leading pack throughout the competition. C-USA Champion Carl Stones challenged Rotich in the final lap, but Rotich cover the move and defeated Stones. The Kenyan native took sixth place in the steeplechase and clocked in a time of 8:46.01 in his first NCAA Championship.

The freshman earned All-American First Team honors in the 3,000m steeplechase at the national meet. It was just the sixth race at this distance for Rotich in his career.

Donn Cabral from Princeton took first in the event crossing the finish line with a time of 8:25.44. In second it was Craig Forys of Michigan with a time of 8:40.66, followed by Cory Leslie of Ohio State with a finish of 8:40.98.
