UTEP Dominates Fitzgerald Invitational

The UTEP cross country women’s and men’s teams dominated the field on Saturday morning at the 26th annual Lori Fitzgerald Invitational at the Chamizal Memorial National Park.
“We had an improved performance today,” head coach Paul Ereng said. “I think everyone stepped up especially Risper (Kimaiyo), Justice (Chirchir) and Elkana (Rotich).”
All-American Kimaiyo led the women’s team for the third consecutive meet crossing the finish line at 17:41.
Junior Karina Garcia took third place for the Miners clocking in at 18:57 with Gladys Chepsat following right behind with a time of 19:30.
Senior Kitria Stewart completed the race with a time of 20:09 to finish seventh overall. Newcomers Jackline Ekai and Laura Delgado completed the course at 20:30 and 21:01, respectively.
The women finished the meet with a team score of 22 to finish first in UTEP’s home invitational.
Chirchir was the top collegiate runner with a time 21:41 marking his second consecutive victory at the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational. Right on his heels were Abel Koskey and Rotich with times of 21:42.1 and 21:42.4.
Solomon Gardea and Juan Blanco rounded up the top-10 recording times of 21:45 and 22:09. While newcomer Ramon Garcia completed the men’s 7K at 23:28.
The Miners finished on top with a team score of 20 points while NM State took second with 35 points.
The Miners will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Kachina Classic in Las Cruces, N.M.
