Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 2:45pm

UTEP’s Risper Kimaiyo has been nominated for the 2010-11 Collegiate Women Sports Award for cross country presented by Honda and voted by NCAA member schools.

“We are very proud to have another student-athlete being considered for this award,” Paul Ereng said. “The nomination for Risper in this award validates what we are doing with our cross country program. She works very hard on the field and in the classroom and this is an indication that we are producing top student-athletes in one of the best programs in the country.”

The nomination is the third consecutive for UTEP female student-athlete. Four-time NCAA champion Blessing Okagbare was nominated for the track and field award in 2009 and in 2010.

Kimaiyo is joined by Villanova’s Sheila Reed, Georgetown’s Emily Infeld and Oregon’s Jordan Hasay on the list of nominees. Each nominee’s university is awarded $1,000 to its women’s athletic fund. The winner’s program receives $5,000. In addition, the winner is eligible for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded to the nation’s outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.

The sophomore claimed her second cross country All-America honor with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. A nursing major, Kimaiyo carries a 3.60 GPA. She was named the 2010 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Mountain Region Female Athlete of the Year and was the Conference USA Champions for the second straight year.

The Iten, Kenya, native is the second cross country athlete to be nominated for the award. Kristina Ljunberg made the list of nominees during the 1987-88 and 1988-89 seasons.

The winner will be announced on Monday, Dec. 6.
