UTEP Becomes Bowl Eligible With Victory over SMU
UTEP Miners become bowl eligible for the first time since 2005 with a 28-14 victory over SMU. UTEP improves to 6-4 on the season after the Miners most impressive victory. SMU falls to 5-5. UTEP Senior Quarterback Trevor Vittatoe was a very effecient 17-28 for 183 yards and 3 touchdowns on Senior Night. 26 Seniors called this their final home game of the season at the Sun Bowl, as UTEP will hit the road for their two remaining games at Arkansas and at Tulsa. Senior Donald Buckram led the Miners with 43 yards on 11 carries, but left midway through the game due to a sore ankle. Marlon McClure led the Miners with 4 receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown. SMU was led by QB Kyle Padron, who was 28-44, for 255 yards and accounted for one touchdown passing and one rushing.
Despite being outgained by 40 yards, UTEP controlled most of the game, especially when SMU made the score 21-14 in the 3rd quarter. Vittatoe showed his senior poise, and helped march UTEP down the field, and handing off to Leilyon Myers for a 2 yard touchdown in the 4th quarter to make the final score 28-14.
