EL PASO, TEXAS – The UTEP men’s basketball team checks in at no. 25 in this week’s USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, the first national ranking for the Miners in 18 years.

UTEP has won 10 straight conference games for the first time in school history. The Miners are 20-5 overall and atop Conference USA with an 11-1 mark.

UTEP’s last ranking came in the final, post-tournament coaches’ poll of the 1991-92 campaign. The Miners were no. 22 after finishing 27-7 and upsetting top seed Kansas to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

The Miners are the top team receiving votes in this week’s Associated Press poll with 86. UTEP hasn’t been ranked by AP since Feb. 10, 1992 (no. 21).

UTEP will play at Southern Miss on Wednesday. The game will be televised in El Paso on Time Warner Cable MetroSports Southwest Channel 24 beginning at 6 p.m. MT.

For the second week in a row Randy Culpepper is the Conference USA Player of the Week.  He scored 29 points in 30 minutes of playing time as UTEP beat Tulsa 78-70.
