UTEP and NMSU to square off in Softball Tuesday

UTEP and NMSU to square off in Softball Tuesday
Sports
Monday, February 11, 2013 - 3:34pm

After a weekend on the West Coast at the Fresno State Kick-Off, the UTEP Miners (2-3) will play I-10 rival New Mexico State (3-1) tomorrow night in Las Cruces at the NM State Softball Complex (5:30 p.m. MT).

“James and I have known and been friends with coach (Kathy) Rudolph and coach (Catherine) Heifner for many years. We have a ton of respect for both of them,” co-head coach Kathleen Rodriguez said. “They continue yearly to put together a great group of student/athletes who compete at a very high level. NMSU is a greatrivalry game that our Miners look forward to playing every year.”

The Miners are coming off a come-from-behind win over UC Riverside, 5-3, Sundayafternoon, while NM State beat in-state rival New Mexico, 3-0, on Sunday.

Ashley Collazo came up with a clutch hit to begin the rally for the Miners. The senior infielder hit a two-out single to left field that scored two runs that tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Miners would go on to score twomore runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to clinch the win.

Miner fans are encouraged to go out and watch the Orange and Blue and get a taste of UTEP Softball before the home opener on Feb. 23 against NM State at the Helen of Troy Field (1:30 p.m. MT). The game will be free to all fans in conjunction with the 2013 National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

The Miners got positive production from a few of the freshman and junior transfers. Freshman Kawehiokalani Netane led the Miners with a .467 batting average, while junior transfers Alanna Leasau tallied six RBI and Erika Arcuri scored fiveruns. Freshman pitcher Danielle Pearson recorded her first win and posted a .62 ERA.

Senior Kayla Oranger stole three bases this past weekend, after only stealing one last season. In fact, the Miners stole five bases in their first five games after stealing 16 all last season. Collazo batted .417, including her 1-for-3 and two RBI performance Sunday afternoon.
