UTEP and NMSU Golf Compete in Herb Wimberley Invitational
The UTEP men's golf team played well on the first day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Monday in Las Cruces, putting together rounds of 280 and 287 for a 36-hole total of 567, while the New Mexico State men’s golf team sits in 11th place after finishing the first two rounds of its home tournament.
That leaves the Miners tied for third place with Texas State (286-281-567) and within striking distance of tournament leader Wichita State (283-282-565). UNLV is in second place at the 12-team event (296-293-589).
The Aggies finished two rounds of play at the New Mexico State University Golf Course with a two-round total score of 18-over-par 586. The team finished with identical scores of 9-over-par 293 after each of the day’s two rounds.
NM State is being led by senior Justin Shin who is in a tie for ninth with three other golfers heading into the final round. Shin shot a 2-under-par 69 during the second round to give a total score of 1-under-par 141 (72-69) after two rounds.
Among the other four golfers compromising the Aggie team, senior Derek Baade finished with a two-round total score of 6-over-par 148 (74-74) placing him in a tie for 41st, junior Willie Hogan is in a tie for 50th with a 7-over-par 149 (74-75), junior Zack Adams sits at 8-over-par 150 (73-77) in a tie for 59th and senior Miko Alejandro finished in 69th place with a total score of 12-over-par 154 (79-75).
UTEP sent an eight-man contingent to the NM State Golf Course. Martin Simonsen is tied for ninth place with a one-under-par 141 (71-70). Ross Rotwein is tied for 13th place (68-74-142), Devin Miertschin is tied for 23rd place (76-68-144), Ian Patterson is tied for 38th place (72-75-147) and Roberto Ruiz is tied for 41st place (69-79-148). Competing as individuals were Jere Pelletier (tied for sixth, 70-70-140), Jerry Castrellon (tied for 38th, 74-73-147) and Jose Romero (76-76-152).
The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
