The New Mexico Junior Olympics were held this past weekend in Los Lunas, New Mexico. The tournament, sanctioned by USA Boxing, brought together the top youth boxers, 8-16 years old, from around the state in a two day tournament.

Joel Macias, age 15 of Las Cruces, beat Justin Guertin of Albuquerque in the male 119 lb. division championship bout. Amy Salinas, age 11 of Las Cruces, beat Analuisa Mendoza of Farmington New Mexico in the female 70 lb. division championship bout. Salinas also took home top prize of "Outstanding Female" fighter. Both Macias and Salinas will move on the the Regional Junior Olympics to be held in Phoenix, Arizona in May. This is the second time both Macias and Salinas have won the New Mexico Junior Olympics in their respected divisions.

Both Macias and Salinas fight out of the Las Cruces Police Athletic League (PAL) Boxing Club, a non-profit program that takes "at-risk" youth off the streets and teaches them discipline through boxing. The Las Cruces PAL program is noted for producing many local, state and national champions throughout its 40-year plus history. Both Macias and Salinas are heavily featured in a documentary film produced on the program called "Let's Shine – an Inside Look at the Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club."
