Track and Field Athlete Making Name for Herself at NM State
Junior track and field athlete Jndia Cleveland has been making a name for herself and getting into the record books at New Mexico State, but there's more to her than just track and field.
Cleveland is a double major in Business Entrepreneurship and Human Resources, but after she's done getting her bachelors degree she has plans to get her masters in business and go to beauty school so that she can open up high-end salons all over the country. She also has in interest in coaching Division I collegiate track and field. She's already had some coaching experience helping out her little brother, and is always willing to lend her time to high school students back home.
Track and field is currently the only sports Cleveland competes in but in high school she also played volleyball, soccer, and basketball as well as being an active member of her schools honor society chapter and Black Student Union.
Cleveland left her mother and brother back home in Arizona, but she does have the chance to see them for big track meets. She chose NM State because of a scholarship offered to her, but she's really enjoyed the campus since she's been here.
"From what I've seen from other campuses NM State is really diverse and I really like the school and that the area isn't too big." Cleveland said. "It's smaller and keeps me out of trouble. I can get where I need to go easily, it's a really nice campus."
When she's not competing or practicing for track and field and Cleveland is a normal college student, but admits she'd rather stay home and watch movies with her roommates than go out on a Friday or Saturday night.
"I like to stay at home and sleep." Cleveland said. "Managing school and track and everything else is pretty draining, so most of the time I just want to stay home and sleep or hang out with my roommates."
Cleveland has been named Verizon WAC Athlete of the Week two weeks in a row and her name is in the NM State record books in many indoor and outdoor track and field events including: 100 meter hurdles (outdoor, 3rd), 400 meter hurdles (outdoor, 5th), long Jump (outdoor, 6th), 4 x 100 meter relay (outdoor, 6th), 200 meter dash (indoor, 9th) 60 meter hurdle (indoor, 1st), long jump (indoor, 5th), pentathlon (indoor, 3rd), and 4 x 400 meter relay (indoor, 1st & 2nd).
