Sunland Derby winner Twice the Appeal runs second in $75,000 Oaklawn feature
2011 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) winner Twice The Appeal ran a close second in the $75,000 Fifth Season Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Friday. Facing older runners for the first time, Twice The Appeal made a bold wide move on the far turn and loomed large in upper stretch. He battled with Color Me Blue in the final furlong only to lose a close photo finish. Luis Quinonez rode Twice The Appeal for trainer Jeff Bonde. The Sunland hero raced at 7-2 odds. The $800,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) champ was making his first start since running in last year’s Kentucky Derby. 4-5 favorite It Happened Again finished third.
Long-time Sunland Park jockey Joe Martinez rode his 2,500th winner on Friday. He rode Fanny Chenal ($22.00) to victory in the 7th race for trainer Michael Barber. Martinez is a former riding champion at Sunland Park and recently won the $110,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap aboard Desert Hennessy.
Saturday’s featured 10th race is the $110,000 La Senora Stakes at 6 furlongs. $110,000 Enchantress Stakes winner Whisper’s Sister is one of the probable favorites. Trainer Joel Marr has two expert sprinters in Quinton’s Doll Who and Easy Loving Who. Post time is 12:25 p.m. Saturday is Heineken Day at the races. The Heineken Girls will be attendance and special door prizes will be given away.
