Tuesday, June 4, 2013 - 3:23pm

Former Miner Anete Steinberga will play for Latvia at the 2013 European Women’s Basketball Championships in France June 15-30. The continental championships (including Israel) will feature 16 teams, and Latvia will play in Group C with host France, Great Britain and Serbia. Latvia opens up against France on June 15. The team, which punched its ticket to the event by virtue of a runner-up showing in Group E last year, finished eighth in the last EuroBasket in 2011.

“We’re extremely happy for Anete,” UTEP head coach Keitha Adams said. “She will do a great job! She’s such a competitor and hard worker!”

The May 2013 graduate of UTEP (3.37 GPA in psychology) was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange and Blue (2009-13). She ranks sixth all time for rebounds (582) and eighth in scoring (1,024), finishing as one of four Miners in program history with at least 1,000 points and 570 boards. Steinberga helped UTEP pile up the second-most victories in a four-year stretch at the school (83), including consecutive 20-win seasons (29-4, 2011-12 & 22-10, 2012-13).

She enjoyed a banner senior season, earning first-team All-Conference USA honors while setting a school record for consecutive double-digit scoring games (23) and double-digit scoring games in a season (29). Her efforts led the Miners to a spot in the 2013 C-USA tournament semifinals.

Previous accolades include being a two-time C-USA Player of the Week, tabbed to the 2010 C-USA All-Freshman squad and a four-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll member (2010, 211, 2012 & 2013).

Steinberga is no stranger to the international game, previously having competed with Latvia’s U16, U18 and U20 teams at eight different European Championships. She has accounted for better than 8.0 points per game in half of them, including averaging a double-double at both the U18 2008 edition (12.6 ppg/10.1 rpg) and U16 2006 (15.6 ppg/10.9 rpg).

Following the competition, Steinberga will begin preparations to embark on her professional career for Castors Braine in Belgium.
