St. Louis Holds off Giants; Tigers Win Again

Sports
Sunday, October 14, 2012 - 10:48pm

The first game of the National League Championship Series saw the San Francisco Giants fall 6-4 to the St. Louis Cardinals in a matchup between the last two World Series champions.

Last years winner jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the fourth inning over the Giants but San Fran mounted a comeback in the bottom of the frame pulling within two but the Cardinals end the threat and take game one of the best-of-seven series. Game two plays monday at AT&T park.

The talk of today's 3-0 Detroit Tigers win over the New York Yankees in the second game of the ALCS was a blown call in the eighth inning.

Umpire Jim Nelson called Omar Infante safe after a play at second base. But replays show that Yankee Robinson Cano tagged Infante in the chest before he could get back to the base. As a result, Yankee manager Joe Girardi was tossed after arguing.

He said he had to take up for his team.

"He told me to let it go. He was trying to keep me in the game. It's hard to let it go when it changes the complexion of the game, possibly. That's hard. I mean, this is not a game in April. There's going to be things that happen in April and a lot of times, there's time. But I mean, this is the best of seven, and that's a hard thing to do" said the Yankees skipper.

"Well I just thought we hung in there, we were able to take advantage of a couple of things and Garcia was able to muscle one in there, he didn't hit it hard but he hit it in the right place. And those things are some of the things you need in post season play," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland. "You never know how it's going to play out, but a little blooper here or there... I thought Miggy came alive pretty good, I thought Prince had a great at-bat against Rapada, we played good in a tough place to play against a great team."

The Tigers lead in the series 2-0. The series resumes on Tuesday in Detroit.
