Wednesday, July 7: The final has been set, and come Sunday evening, we'll have a first-time World Cup Champion. Spain defeated Germany, 1-0 today in Durban, South Africa to advance to the World Cup Final for the first time. Spain has never been to the final, while the Netherlands has been there twice, losing in the 1974 and 1978 World Cup Final. Germany fought tough against the Spaniards, but was a fantastic header by Carles Puyol in the 73rd minute which proved to be the winner. It will be the first final since 1978 Argentina-Netherlands between two teams that have not won a title. Spain is the fourth team to reach the final after losing its opener, and the first since 1994 Italy. No team has won the World Cup after losing its opener. 12:30pm MT Sunday, Spain will face the Netherlands for soccer immortality.
