Texas Tech is close to hiring a National Championship coach to guide the Red Raiders in Lubbock.

Reports today suggest that Texas Tech is writing up a contract with Tubby Smith, the former University of Minnesota coach who was let go last week after six seasons. Smith led Kentucky to the NCAA National Championship in 1998. This year Minnesota won its first NCAA playoff game since 1997, but Smith's Gophers never finished higher than sixth in the Big Ten.

Smith would be taking over in Lubbock from interim coach Chris Walker, who went 11-20 this past season. Walker took over from former UTEP head coach Billy Gillespie, who resigned in September.
