Show Some Magic did just that by delivering a driving win in the 50th running of the $106,000 Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Sunday.

With leading rider Miguel Hernandez at the controls, Show Some Magic parlayed a stalking trip into a successful journey in the one mile prep for both the $130,000 Mine That Bird Derby on Feb. 23 and the $800,000 Sunland Park Derby (Gr. III) on March 24.

A very well built colt by Any Given Saturday, Show Some Magic realized some of his potential in the Riley Allison producing the best effort of his young career. The former Saratoga maiden winner was well placed down the backstretch and generated a punishing move on the far turn to take the lead. The chestnut two-year-old responded eagerly and was called upon by Hernandez in mid-stretch.

Show Some Magic fought off a valiant effort from 23-1 long shot Stormdriver. The two talented freshmen were locked in battle for almost a furlong but Show Some Magic pulled away by one-half length in the final yards. The 6-5 favorite was timed in a good 1:38.19.

Winning the Riley Allison Futurity for the second straight year were owners Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas. Last season’s leading owners at Sunland Park may have another star in the barn. They won the 2011 edition with the talented runner Isn’t He Clever who went on to win the Borderland Derby and finish second in the Sunland Derby (Gr. III). Show Some Magic ran 5th in the Grade 2 Hopeful Stakes behind eventual Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Shanghai Bobby. The Riley Allison Futurity win was worth $63,000, pushing his lifetime earnings to nearly $163,000.

A jubilant winner trainer Henry Dominguez said that the Mine That Derby on Feb. 24 might be his next assignment.

Stormdriver ran the race of his life in the one mile text. Jockey Ry Eikleberry claimed foul on the winner for bearing out in the stretch. Following a stewards’ inquiry, there was no change in the order of finish. The runner-up earned $23,320 for owner Mark Breen of Scottsdale, Arizona. Stonebridge Gold wound up in third place and was no threat to the top two finishers.

There will be no live racing on Tuesday (Christmas Day). A special live racing card will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 26 starting at 12:25 p.m.
