Rush soccer aims for a National Championship

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 - 8:57pm

Rush soccer has 35 club teams in the city of El Paso, but only one, the Under-17 team, is headed to Greensboro, North Carolina for the National Premier League championship.  For youth soccer players, this is one of the 'creme of the crop' tournaments.  Coached by former El Paso Patriots striker Mike Griego, the U-17 Rush has won tournaments in the area of Arizona and Texas, then the region, which consisted of Utah, New Mexico and Colorado to advance to the national tournament.

"t's amazing, I mean, I have always been excited as a player, growing up, and to be able to compete at something like this, I never got the chance so I think it's the most exciting thing for these kids," said coach Mike Griego.  Defender Andre Prieto added, "We have very skillful players on the ball and we don't mess up very much in the back, and as far as that goes, I think the team chemistry is really going to pull us through." Defender Kevin Chavez said, "We're actually really close, we have been playing together for three years, so we have really good chemistry together."

The tournament begins Thursday, July 10.
