Rollickin Red demolishes field in $85,000 Challenger Six Handicap

Rollickin Red demolishes field in $85,000 Challenger Six Handicap

Rollickin Red demolished his rivals and remained unbeaten over Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino soil after scoring a dominant 3 and 1/4 length victory in the Challenger Six Handicap at 870 yards on Sunday.

With expert rider Casey Lambert in the irons, the amazing distance expert broke well from the #7 post position and quickly assumed a powerful presence in the New Mexico-bred stakes race. Rolling comfortably in the 3-path, Rollickin Red pulled clear of the field in mid-stretch and was striding powerfully down the lane. 18-l long shot De Wagons Strawfly made a pronounced wide move but could not advance on the 3-5 public choice. Lambert said he had a “ton of horse left at the wire.”

Trainer by Todd Fincher, Rollickin Red earned his third career stakes win. The four-year-old son of Roll Hennessy Roll holds 7 wins from 10 career starts has won all five of his starts at Sunland Park. He covered the distance in a fast 44.739 seconds, good for 93 speed index. The winner picked up a $51,000 pay day for the Rollickin Red Partners of El Paso, Texas. Rollickin Red has dominated this division and has earned over $233,000.

Fincher and Lambert have two stakes wins so far in the young meet. The highly successful trainer-jockey combination won last weekend’s $85,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap with the high powered filly Rose’s Desert.

The resurgent speedball De Wagons Strawfly ran a fine race to gain second despite a very wide journey. The upstart broke from the #8 post position and was unable to save any ground throughout the feature. The 870 lover finished second over 3 lengths in front of defending champion Kc Royal Flush. The latter could not generate a stretch kick and finished a well beaten third.

Call Me A Blazn Chic, a winner of over a half million dollars, puts her glossy resume on the line in Sunday’s $85,000 Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Handicap (4th race) at 400 yards. Double stakes winner Back Seat Roll and Desertsmagic collide in the $85,000 Enchantress Stakes (10th race) at one mile.

Post time on Sunday and Tuesday is 12:25 p.m.
