Rodolph Signs Six to NLI

Sunday, November 18, 2012 - 12:08am

Head coach Kathy Rodolph and the NM State softball team announces the signing of six players to National Letters of Intent to play with the Aggies in the fall of 2013.

Rodolph coached the Aggies to a 24-29 overall record after earning the Western Athletic Conference title in 2011 and getting a bid to the NCAA Regionals.

The Aggies welcome Taylor Lewallen, Haley Nakamura, Devon Thomey, Savannah Washington, Susie Chandler and Misty Ho'ohuli to NM State.

"This group of Aggies is very quick, powerful and versatile," Rodolph said. "I love that they are all athletic enough to play multiple positions. They each embody all of the attributes we seek to represent: academic excellence, commitment to their communities and competitive drive. We are very proud to bring them into the Aggie Softball organization."

Taylor Lewallen (First Base || Surprise, Az. || Willow Canyon HS)
Lewallen is a four-year varsity member at Willow Canyon high school. She collected 32 RBI as a junior with a .524 batting average. In her junior year, Lewallen was named to the Division I Section I second team and was an all-division second team member. The shortstop is the first softball player from Willow Canyon to earn a Division I scholarship. Her club team, Arizona Storm Gold Brun, finished fifth overall at the PGF Nationals.

Rodolph on Lewallen:
"Taylor is a savvy, gritty player who knows how to bear down when the pressure is on. She can play multiple positions and I am confident her competitive spirit will fit well in our program"

Haley Nakamura (Shortstop || Lahaina, Hawai'i || Lahainaluna HS)
An all-around athlete, Nakamura was named MIL basketball honorable mention in 2012 and collected HHSA All Stat second team accolades for her efforts as a utility player. She has been selected first team MIL all star shortstop each of her first three years at Lahainaluna High School.

Rodolph on Nakamura:
"Haley is a dual threat offensively from the left side of the plate. Her power and her quickness will impact our offense right away. She is very agile defensively and can play multiple positions. We are very excited to see Haley in Crimson and White."

Devon Thomey (Catcher || Sugar Land, Texas || Dulles HS)
Thomey earned first team all district in 2012 as well as first team all-sun as a sophomore and junior. The Dulles High School Most Valuable Player hit a .489 average with three homers as a junior and a .457 batting average with 26 runs scored in her sophomore campaign. She earned the Academic Excellence Award and is a member of the National Honors Society and Spanish Club.

Rodolph on Thomey:
"Devon is a dual threat from the left side of the plate. She has good short game skills and power potential. Defensively she can catch or play infield. We like her versatility and look forward to seeing her develop as an Aggie."

Savannah Washington (Catcher || Angleton, Texas || Angleton HS)
Savannah earned all-district and all-country accolades in her sophomore and junior seasons. She helped her varsity high school team reach the semi-finals of Texas class 4-A Division I in 2010, while reaching the state playoffs each of the past three years. In 2012, Washington collected nine doubles and three triple to lead her team while averaging .354 at the plate. She plays club softball for the Texas Kaos, coached by Bert Emanuel, where she has hit 19 homeruns in the past two seasons.

Rodolph on Washington:
"Savannah has tremendous power potential. She can catch or play infield. We believe she will thrive in our system and become a powerful force in the Aggie lineup."

Susie Chandler (Shortstop || Farmington, N.M. || Piedra Vista HS)
Chandler has been a varsity letterwinner at Piedra Vista High School since her eighth grade year. She contributed in her team earning the state title each of the past four seasons and was named first team all-district and first team all-state as a sophomore and junior.

Rodolph on Chandler:
"We are always excited to sign in state talent and Susie Chandler is a champion on many levels. She is quick, athletic and committed to becoming the best NCAA Division I player she can be and we look forward to coaching her."

Misty Ho'ohuli (Infield || Honolulu, Hawai'i || Kamehameha HS)

Rodolph on Ho'ohuli:
"Misty has great speed and athleticism. She can play multiple positions defensively and has effective leadership skills already. We look forward to seeing Misty on the base paths in Aggie Country."

NM State opens the 2013 season with the Hotel Encanto Invitational on Feb. 8.
