Whoa, slow down Rice, what's the hurry!!?? Rice had 671 yards of total offense today in a 41-37 victory over UTEP, dropping the Miners to 4-5 overall, 1-4 in Conference USA. Rice Quarterback Nick Fanuzzi was 30 of 43 for 405 yards and three touchdowns.
Rice receiver Vance McDonald caught eight passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, while UTEP's Mike Edwards bettered McDonald with 7 receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns, but it was not enough.
The Owls (3-6, 2-4 Conference USA) ended a three-game losing streak. Nick Lamaison was 16 of 29 for 294 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Miners.
UTEP’s first points came at the 13:57 mark of the first quarter, making it the quickest score of the Mike Price era. The previous fastest score came at 13:41 in the first quarter versus Colorado State two weeks ago. UTEP has scored a TD in the first three minutes of four of the last five games (Houston, Tulane, Colorado State, Rice).
Edwards finished with a UTEP-high 187 yards receiving, surpassing the 86 he had at SMU on Sept. 10. His college high is 216 yards at College of the Desert while at Mt. SAC in 2010. The 187 yards are the ninth-most by a UTEP player and the third-most since 1970 behind Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jr.’s 223 versus NM State in 2006 and Arnie Adkison’s 200 at Utah in 1987. Edwards registered his first multiple TD game at UTEP and the fifth of his college career. He had four such games in two seasons at Mt. SAC (2008 & 2010).Dakota Warren’s missed PAT in the fourth quarter ended a streak of 72 straight made.Nathan Jeffery had a career-high 126 kickoff return yards.
The 671 yards were the second-most allowed by the Miners this season next to the 710 gained by Houston on Sept. 29.The 21:37 of possession time was UTEP’s lowest total since the 2008 season finale at East Carolina (21:14), and tied for the second-fewest of the Mike Price era.
The Miners have been held under 100 yards rushing in back-to-back games and are 1-4 when being kept under the century mark this season.
UTEP will play back-to-back home games starting next Saturday against East Carolina (6 p.m. MT). The Miners will close out their 2011 home schedule versus Tulsa on Nov. 19 (1 p.m. MT).
