Sophomore Richard Olsson sets a personal-best at the 2012 UTEP Springtime on Saturday as the Miners kickoff the outdoor season at Kidd Field.

Olsson posted a mark of 71.58m in the men’s javelin throw finishing first in the event. The Karistad, Sweden native surpassed his mark of 69.26m posted at last year’s UTEP invitational.

Junior Donovant Grant took silver in the men’s high jump with a personal-best of 2.03m.

Wrapping up the men’s field events is Demetris Elia with the hammer throw recording a mark of 58.21m taking first overall, while El Paso native Matt Dudley registered a toss of 51.31m finishing third in the discus.

The men’s 4x100m relay team (Kristian Dillard, Curtis Kock, Abiola Onakoya and Anthony Wright) took gold with a time of 40.17.

Freshman A-Shawni Mitchell surpassed his personal-best of 48.10 in the 400m posted at the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championships and recorded a time of 46.38.

The distance team had a stellar showing, senior Justice Chirchir took first in the 1,500m with a time of 3:47.85, while Anthony Rotich and Elkana Rotich took third and fourth clocking in times of 3:50.53 and 3:50.71, respectively.

The women’s squad Endurance Abinuwa crossed the finish line first in the women’s 100m posting a time of 11.62. The All-American lead the women’s 4x100m relay team to a first-place finish as the squad recorded a time of 44.65.

All-American Risper Kimaiyo took gold in the women’s 1,500m crossing the finish line with a time of 4:33.41, while Karina Garcia blew past her competitors in the 5,000m posting a time of 17:50.43 finishing first overall.

Senior Laura Macauley registered a personal-best of 48.77m in the women’s javelin throw taking first-place.

The Miners will return to action of Thursday, March 29 at the 2012 Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
