Price Discusses #18 South Florida at Monday Press Conference

UTEP Football to Face No. 18 USF in Tampa Saturday

UTEP (2-1, 0-1 C-USA) faces 18th-ranked South Florida (3-0, 0-0 Big East) on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. MDT at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. and will be available on ESPN3.com.

The Miners are coming off a 16-10 victory at I-10 rival, NM State to improve to 2-1 on the season. The Bulls are coming off a 70-17 victory over Florida A&M to remain undefeated.

The Bulls recorded 745 yards of total offense in to a 70-17 thrashing of Florida A&M on Saturday. B.J. Daniels was 21-of-31 with four touchdown passes. Darrell Scott was the Bulls’ leading rusher, registering 146 yards on 12 carries and scoring three of USF’s five rushing TDs. The defense held FAMU to 181 yards of offense, including 39 rushing. The Bulls also won against Notre Dame and Ball State, respectively, to open the 2011 campaign. USF ranks in the top-20 nationally in turnover margin (eighth, 1.67), passing offense (12th, 325.7 ypg), total offense (13th, 506.0 ypg), scoring offeense (14th, 43.3 ppg), rushing defense (18th, 77.7 ypg) and tackles for losses (tied for 18th, 7.7 avg.).

UTEP junior OL James Nelson and USF junior RB Darrell Scott are Ventura, Calif. UTEP assistant head coach Jeff Woodruff and USF assistant head coach Rick Smith coached against each other in the 1986 Sun Bowl. Woodruff was the offensive coordinator at Washington and Smith was the secondary coach at Alabama at that time. USF defensive coordinator Mark Snyder was the head coach at Marshall from 2005-09, posting a 1-2 record against the Miners.

The Miners are 4-47 all-time versus teams listed in the Associated Press top-25 poll. UTEP is 1-30 on the road versus AP top-25 squads with the lone victory coming on Nov. 2, 1974 at no. 14 Arizona State, 31-27. Since then the Miners have dropped 25 consecutive road games to ranked foes. Twenty of the 25 losses have come by 20 or more points. The closest UTEP has come to a victory during that stretch was a 45-39 setback at no. 16 North Carolina on Oct. 2, 1993. UTEP is 1-6 versus ranked teams under coach Mike Price, including a 58-41 victory over no. 12 Houston on Oct. 3, 2009 in the Sun Bowl.
