Wednesday, March 24:  Tonight, UTEP Men's Basketball coach Tony Barbee announced he will take over as the head coach at Auburn University.  A press conference is scheduled for Thursday, in Auburn, Alabama.  There are plenty of candidates to take over UTEP Basketball, and Newschannel 9 has learned there are several favorites:

You start with Billy Gillispie, a former UTEP coach, great recruiter with Texas ties.  There have been problems with a DUI conviction but UTEP boosters are already raising money to pay for a Gillispie hire and news channel 9 has learned of a booster meeting with UTEP President Dr. Diana Natalacio as early as tomorrow morning to boost Billie's case.

Tim Floyd will also be mentioned.  A former UTEP Assitant coach, Floyd coached at the highest levels in college and the NBA, and also has some baggage with an NCAA investiation at USC but would be a very popular hire.

Bob Marlin has guided Sam Houston State to two NCAA tournament berths.  He can recruit Texas and would be afordable.  Marlin was also a candidate at Auburn and is a candidate at Houston.  If hired, Marlin could be a long term solution a UTEP.

Rob Evans will be interested in the job.  Evans played at New Mexico State, and was an assistant under Lou Henson.  He obviously knows the area, and is a former head coach at both ole Miss and Arizona State.  Evans is currently an assistant at the University of Arkansas.

Tony Benford is an assistant at Marquette and a native of Hobbs, New Mexico.  Considered one of the top assistants in the country, prior to joining Marquette, Benford was an assistant with Doc Sadler at Nebraska.

And when UTEP hired Tony Barbee, Athletic Director Bob Stull almost offered the job to Tim Jankovich. Jankovich is the head coach at Illinois State, but has been an assistant at Texas and Kansas.

If we are going to bring Bill back......... why raise money ?? We should be collecting Kegs and that's an offer he can't refuse. He just got 3 million from Kentucky, so he isn't looking for the money .

UTEP NEEDS TO HIRE SOME COACH WHO IS DOING WELL BUT HAS NEVER BEEN AT UTEP OR NMSU. DON'T HIRE ANYONE WHO WAS HERE BEFORE AND RAN AFTER TWO SEASON. GILLESPE MAY BE A GOOD COACH BUT BEEN HERE DONE THAT. NO MORE. THE ONLY WAY WE ARE GOING TO KEEP A WINNING COACH IS TO OFFER HIM A SALARY HE WON'T WANT TO WALK AWAY FROM. NO MORE THAN A THREE YEAR CONTRACT BUT IF HE IS DOING AS WELL AS BARBEE THE IN THE LAST YEAR OFFER TO EXTEND THE CONTRACT AND OFFER SOME HIGHER PERKS. HASKINS IS GONE.

EASY TO CAST STONES EXAMINE YOUR OWN LIFE AND BELIVE IN FORGIVENESS, LOOK AT CURRENT UK TEAM, RECRUITED BY BILLY, HE KNOWS THIS IS HIS OPPORTUNITY AT REDEMPTION.

Why would we bring the drunk back to town. Apparently that guy never learns. He's going to end up in jail here.

TIM FLOYD FOR HEAD COACH!

how quickly you forget Don Haskins was a drunk too and we never questioned his abilities to coach now did we....im tired of hearing alot of people say don't hire the drunk....dude the man can coach and recruit! plus i doubt with what he has gone through, he won't leave again so quickly. he's been on the other side of the greener pastures, its not always worth it. Maybe now he'll realize he has a good thing at UTEP.
