Wednesday, March 24: Tonight, UTEP Men's Basketball coach Tony Barbee announced he will take over as the head coach at Auburn University. A press conference is scheduled for Thursday, in Auburn, Alabama. There are plenty of candidates to take over UTEP Basketball, and Newschannel 9 has learned there are several favorites:
You start with Billy Gillispie, a former UTEP coach, great recruiter with Texas ties. There have been problems with a DUI conviction but UTEP boosters are already raising money to pay for a Gillispie hire and news channel 9 has learned of a booster meeting with UTEP President Dr. Diana Natalacio as early as tomorrow morning to boost Billie's case.
Tim Floyd will also be mentioned. A former UTEP Assitant coach, Floyd coached at the highest levels in college and the NBA, and also has some baggage with an NCAA investiation at USC but would be a very popular hire.
Bob Marlin has guided Sam Houston State to two NCAA tournament berths. He can recruit Texas and would be afordable. Marlin was also a candidate at Auburn and is a candidate at Houston. If hired, Marlin could be a long term solution a UTEP.
Rob Evans will be interested in the job. Evans played at New Mexico State, and was an assistant under Lou Henson. He obviously knows the area, and is a former head coach at both ole Miss and Arizona State. Evans is currently an assistant at the University of Arkansas.
Tony Benford is an assistant at Marquette and a native of Hobbs, New Mexico. Considered one of the top assistants in the country, prior to joining Marquette, Benford was an assistant with Doc Sadler at Nebraska.
And when UTEP hired Tony Barbee, Athletic Director Bob Stull almost offered the job to Tim Jankovich. Jankovich is the head coach at Illinois State, but has been an assistant at Texas and Kansas.
