West Texas Amateur Championship took a turn towards the historic on Sunday afternoon as El Paso, Texas’ Jere Pelletier posted his final round 68. The four-under trip around Isleta Eagle Golf Club just South of Albuquerque, N.M., not only gave him the area’s most important amateur championship, but also placed his name on the same trophy alongside his father, Mark Pelletier.

Mark, now the director of golf at El Paso Country Club, claimed the NMWT Amateur two consecutive years in 1978 and 1979 at Coronado Country Club in El Paso and UNM Championship Golf Club in Albuquerque. After Jere finished up the third round at 14-under par for the 54-hole event, the Pelletiers became the first father and son combination to be able to lay claim to the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association’s premier event.

Pelletier began the final round in a tie for first at 10-under par, but after an opening nine of three-under par 33, the current student at the University of Texas at El Paso put it in cruise and stretched the lead to four at one point. Steady play over the final nine holes was good enough to hold off runner-up Sam Saunders of Albuquerque who finished two shots back at 12-under par.

The 20-year old now not only joins his father on the winner’s list, but also will be engraved alongside past winners like Tommy Armour III, Bart Bryant, Rich Beem, D.J. Brigman and others who have won more than $28 million on professional tours.

The top 10 for this year’s event is as follows:
