Pair of Aggies Earn Player of the Week Honors
Monday, March 21, 2011 - 1:47pm

NMSU Softball Player Hoku Nohara and Baseball player Dan Reid earned WAC Player of the week honors.

For the second time this season and fifth time in her career, New Mexico State softball senior infielder Hoku Nohara earned Hitter of the Week honors from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) the league office announced Monday.

Nohara's fifth honor from the league recognizes her stellar play last week in six games against No. 7 Arizona and No. 14 Nebraska. It marks the third conference recognition of the young season for the Aggies, following Nohara's accolade two weeks ago and sophomore Alex Newman's WAC Pitcher of the Week a week prior.

A senior from Waimanalo, Hawai'i, Nohara blasted a home run in four of six games on the week, including three off Nebraska ace Ashley Hagemann. The all-time leader in home runs at NM State, Nohara broke the program's single-season record of 17 when she hit her 18th long ball in the finale against Nebraska on Sunday. She now ranks second all-time in the WAC with 58 career home runs, four behind the all-time leader. Last season, Nohara hit 16 total home runs

Senior right hand pitcher Dan Reid has been named Verizon Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week as selected by the WAC office, Monday, March 21.

Reid, a senior from Nasonworth, New Brunswick (Fredericton HS), picked up his first career complete game as he led the Aggies to an 11-2 won over IPFW last week. Reid did not allow an earned run and gave up only six hits. He faced 35 batters, struck out two and walked three.

"I am always elated when we have a pitcher of the week selection. We are used to having our hitters honored, so it is great when our pitchers get the recognition they deserve," head coach Rocky Ward said. "Dan has become a true No. 1 pitcher and the leader of this pitching staff. That bodes well for the upcoming conference season."

Reid now has a 2.10 ERA on the year, which is the second best average in the WAC. He has made five appearances on the mound, while working a team-high 34.1 innings this season. Reid is holding opponents to a .258 batting average and has allowed only eight earned runs and nine walks on the year
