Onakoya Qualifies for the Finals at the African Championships

Sophomore Abiola Onakoya has earned a spot in the men’s 400m finals at the 18th African Senior Athletics Championships in Port Novo, Benin Republic on Thursday.

Onakoya clocked in a time of 46.04 in the first round of the 400m dash and finished second overall. The sophomore went on to represent Nigeria in the semifinals and crossed the finish line second in the third heat of the day. The Miner ranks seventh with a time of 46.04 heading into the finals tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. (MT).

Former Miner Blessing Okagbare took second place in the women’s 100m at the African Championships. The All-American was the first Nigerian to cross the finish line with a time of 11.18. Okagbare also competed in the long jump qualification round and finished second with a mark of 6.29m. The Nigerian will be competing in the long jump finals tomorrow at 9:40 a.m.

21st European Athletics Championships
Mickael Hanany represented France at the 21st European Athletics Championships in the men’s high jump. The former Miner posted a jump of 2.23m and stands tied for third going into the finals.

Ronalds Arajs also competed at the European Championships in the men’s 100m dash. Former student-athlete, Arajs took second place in his heat with a time of 10.28 in the first round of the 100m. He went on to semifinals where he finished sixth overall with a time of 10.29. Arajs ran in the 100m finals but failed to finish due to a hamstring injury. The former Miner is expected to compete in the 4x100m relay for Latvia.

Hanany will be taking the field tomorrow in the men’s high jump final at 9:40 a.m.
