Junior Abiola Onakoya is crowned the Conference USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week after posting a stellar performance at the UTEP Invitational.

Onakoya dominated the competition for the Miners taking the track in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay. The junior kicked off the home meet clocking in the ninth-fastest time in the nation of 46.22 in the 400m.

The sprinter went on to compete in the 200m for the first time this season and registered a personal best of 20.83. His time also earned him the No. 18 spot in the national rankings, thus far.

Onakoya concluded the meet as anchor of the 4x400m relay, which proved to be a close finish. The Nigerian native led the squad to a second-place finish with a split of 45.5 and helped the relay team end the race with an overall time of 3:09.85.

The junior is now ranked first in Conference USA in both the 200m and 400m dash. His time also boosted the men’s team in this week’s national ranking to No. 42. This is Onakoya’s first career Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
