The Sochi games are sure to have their share of photo-finishes and heart-stopping action. It's the stuff the Olympics are made of, Amanda Davies takes a look at five memorable moments from past Olympics.

They were the team favored to win the ice hockey event at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics.

The seemingly invincible Soviets had won four golds in a row, but in a game now referred to as the Miracle on Ice,  a U.S. team made up mainly of students beat them 4-3.

On Valentine's Day in Sarajevo in 1984, British ice dancing duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Deans scored 12 out of 18 perfect sixes for their performance to Ravel's Bolero.

Jamaica's four man bobsled team stole the show at the 1988 Calgary Games.

They suffered a dreadful crash on their final run, but their efforts were immortalized in the film Cool Runnings.

The 1994 Lillyhammer Winter Olympics dominated by the figure skating rivals Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding.

Before the games even started Kerrigan was hit in the knee with a bat.

It was later found the attacker was paid by Harding's former husband. Despite her injury Kerrigan went on to pick up a silver medal with Harding finishing eighth.

At the 1998 Nagano Olympics Austrian skiing legend Herman Maier was in a death defying crash during the downhill race.

Days after flying some 40 meters through the air landing on his head he went on to win two gold medals.
