Oñate High School claimed third place in the state bowling tournament held February 15, 2014 in Albuquerque. Oñate, Mayfield and Las Cruces high schools participated from LCPS.

After the Oñate team bowled above-average games in the first three rounds, the team was seeded accordingly for double elimination bracket play: Mayfield fourth, Oñate sixth and LCHS 10th.

Next came bracket play, where all games were best two out of three. Oñate beat Volcano Vista in three and moved on to the number three seed, Valley, winning in three. Oñate was then matched up with La Cueva, with La Cueva winning in three, which sent us to the bottom bracket. Next, we bowled against Manzano High School and won in two games.

This led us into a match with the number four seed, Mayfield. This game was important because it sent the winner either to the semi-finals or out of the tournament. Both teams bowled extremely well, but Oñate was the victor after three games.

The semi-finals were against La Cueva, once again. Oñate came out strong and won the first game, lost momentum and lost the next two games.

The Oñate Knights are very proud of the third-place finish.

Team members and their three-game scores are:
• Daniel Brown, senior: 173/169/193;
• Isaac Medore, junior (team captain): 130/177/207;
• Xavier Tellez, sophomore: 182/199/191;
• Steven Crowell, freshman: 169/159/143;
• Jaden Bates, Camino Real Middle School eighth grader: 202/169/177
• Matthew Patrick, freshman; and Jose Benavidez, sophomore, alternates.

The Oñate bowling team will sponsor a Sonic Night 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26 at the Sonic Drive-In at 2925 N. Main St. 10 percent of all sales during those hours will go to the OHS bowling team, said Ortega-Medore.
