No Decision Tuesday Night for Jones and the Cowboys on a Head Coach

Sports
Tuesday, January 4, 2011 - 11:37pm

Jerry Jones' head coaching search is moving quickly as promised, but it's not complete.

Jones said Tuesday morning (KRLD-FM) he expected a "pretty immediate" resolution, perhaps by the end of the afternoon with a formal announcement as soon as Wednesday. But as of late Tuesday the Cowboys had not announced a press conference date.

Indications since Sunday, the Cowboys' season-finale against Philadelphia (and perhaps well before then), are that interim head coach Jason Garrett leads Jones' candidate list.

Jones has not publicly named a frontrunner, though, only saying that he's pleased with Garrett's eight-game tenure and fully intends to comply with the NFL's "Rooney Rule" requiring teams to interview at least one minority candidate.

Jones planned all along to interview wide receivers coach Ray Sherman, and Sherman said they had a "good" meeting Tuesday for about three hours at Valley Ranch.

Dolphins assistant head coach/secondary Todd Bowles' name has also surfaced, though the Cowboys have not confirmed that a head coaching interview with Bowles will take place. An interview with Bowles or anyone else would obviously delay Jones' final decision.

"We're moving at a real good rate from a timing standpoint," Jones said Tuesday morning, without mentioning specific names.

Sherman, the Cowboys' receivers coach since 2007, has been an NFL assistant for 23 years, working with elite receivers like Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Cris Carter and Terrell Owens. He also has been an offensive coordinator with the Jets, Vikings and Steelers.

Bowles, a former eight-year NFL safety, was the Cowboys' secondary coach from 2005-07 before joining Tony Sparano's new staff in Miami. Well-liked and respected by his players, he was an in-house candidate for the Cowboys' head coaching vacancy in 2007. The job eventually went to Phillips.

The Cowboys could be looking for a defensive coordinator as well - Paul Pasqualoni replaced Phillips on an interim basis for eight games - but NFL assistant coaches only must be granted permission for head coaching interviews. Bowles currently is still under contract with the Dolphins.

Jones has said he doesn't have to formally interview Garrett, citing his previous experience with Garrett as well as Garrett's eight-game tenure as interim coach. The Cowboys won five of eight games, losing three by seven total points to finish 6-10 after a 1-7 start.

"I'm really pleased with how this has turned out, frankly, relative to these last eight ball games," Jones said Tuesday. "I'm really proud that we've had the success that we've had.
