New Mexico State freshman swimmer Aliena Schmidtke opened the 2012 NCAA Championships with the 50 freestyle.

Schmidtke posted a 23.07 performance in the preliminaries for a 61st-place finish.

"This was a good start for Aliena with a strong 50 free," head coach Rick Pratt said. "She had a weird finish, which accounted for her adding a couple tenth's slower than her seed time. This was a good warm-up and ice breaker for Friday's 200, and this is a great experience for a freshman."

Schmidtke competes in the 200 freestyle, Friday, March 16 and concludes the meet with the 100 freestyle, Saturday, March 17.
