For the third time this season, New Mexico State softball player Staci Rodriguez was named Hitter of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference. The award is for the week of April 22-28 and is the fifth honor for the Aggies this season.

Rodriguez, a sophomore outfielder from Paramount, Calif., led the Aggies to a three-game sweep over Seattle U last week to remain atop the WAC standings. She posted a .750 batting average, a .800 on-base percentage and a staggering 2.000 slugging percentage with one double, three home runs and eight RBI in her three games. In Friday night’s series opener, she was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. In the come-from-behind win over the Redhawks in the series finale, Rodriguez hit two three-run home runs. Her first of that game gave the Aggies the initial 3-0 lead over Seattle U in the first inning. She came back for her second shot in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap to 7-6 and give NM State the momentum to come back for a walk-off 9-7 win to sweep the series. With 20 bombs this season, Rodriguez ranks second at NM State and seventh in the WAC in single-season home runs. With the eight RBI last week, she is now tied for second place at NM State and tied for 10th in the WAC in single-season RBI with 62.

NM State (35-15, 16-2 WAC) now sits two games ahead of second-place San Jose State going into the final weekend of the regular season. The Aggies and the Spartans have secured the top-two spots in the WAC Tournament and will battle for the regular-season title on May 3-4, in San Jose, Calif. A battle for the regular-season WAC title is up for grabs in San Jose with game one is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, May 3, and the doubleheader on Saturday is set for 4 p.m.
