New Mexico State junior catcher Zac Fisher was recently named to the 2012 Johnny Bench Award Watch List, which is presented by BaseballSavings.com.

Fisher, who is hitting .339 (20-of-59) through 15 games in 2012, is the first Aggie catcher since Jeffrey Farnham to be named to the watch list. Farnham was a semifinalist in the 2009 season. Fisher is one of two WAC catchers to be named to the watch list along with Nevada junior Carlos Escobar.

Fisher was named to the 2012 National Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and the College Sports Madness Baseball Preseason All-American Teams after a stellar sophomore season. He was a 2011 second team All-WAC selection as a designated hitter and an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Midwest Region selection after leading the team with a .398 batting average and 68 hits. His batting average ranked 20th in the nation and his 71 RBI ranked 76th nationally.

The initial watch list features 43 catchers. More could be added as the season progresses and a group of semifinalists will be announced May 16. Three finalists will be unveiled June 4 and the winner is scheduled to be announced June 28 at a banquet in Wichita, Kansas.

The Johnny Bench Award winner is selected by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission and is sponsored by the Coleman Company and Papa John's Pizza. Twelve former winners are currently playing in Major League Baseball, including Buster Posey (2008), Kurt Suzuki (2004), Ryan Garko (2003) and Kelly Shoppach (2001). James Madison's Jake Lowery was the 2011 winner.
