NMSU women's golf in 7th at WAC Championships
The New Mexico State women’s golf team shot a 28-over-par 316 on Tuesday at the par 72, 6,163-yard Longbow Golf Club. The Aggies will head into the final round of the Club Glove WAC Women’s Golf Championship with a two-day score of 52-over-par 628 (312-316) and in seventh place.
Round two saw all five NM State golfers shoot rounds within two strokes of each other.
Sophomore Laura Barron had the best round of the day for the Aggies, carding a 6-over 78. Freshman Viviana Macias and junior Amelie Buhl both finished the day one shot back of Barron at 7-over 79. Freshman Kacey Dalpes and sophomore Paige Darwin, meanwhile, were right behind, finishing the round at 8-over 80.
Dalpes is the overall leader for NM State with a two-round score of 11-over-par 155 (75-80). She will start the final round in a tie for 23rd. Dalpes sat at 12-over before a birdie during her final hole of the round, her second birdie on the day.
Macias is one shot behind Dalpes in 25th place with a total score of 12-over-par 156 (77-79). Barron, who like Dalpes also had two birdies on the day, is at 14-over-par 158 (80-78) and in a tie for 26th place. One shot behind her sits Buhl in a tie for 28th at 15-over 159 (80-79). Finally, Darwin moved to 33rd place with a two-day total of 20-over-par 164 (84-80).
Overall, Denver increased its first-round lead to a commanding nine strokes. The Pioneers had the best round of the tournament, a 3-over-par, on Tuesday and will start the final day with a total score of 10-over-par 586 (295-291). San Jose State sits in second at 19-over-par 595 (297-298) while Texas-San Antonio is in third at 31-over-par 607 (297-310).
Like her team, Denver’s Tonje Daffinrud also increased her first-round lead. Daffinrud shot an even-par round on Tuesday to remain at 4-under for the tournament. She is being closely followed by two Spartans, Jennifer Brumbaugh who is three shots back at 1-under and Regan De Guzman who will start the final round four shots back at even par.
The conference tournament concludes on Wednesday with the final 18 holes of the tournament. Teams are set to start teeing off 8:30 a.m. (MT).
