NMSU Women Prepare for WAC Track and Field Championships

NMSU Women Prepare for WAC Track and Field Championships
Sports
Monday, May 9, 2011 - 2:24pm

The New Mexico State women's track and field squad is confident in their chances next week at the WAC Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii.

"If we compete how we have all year, we'll be fine," head coach Orin Richburg said.  The Aggies finished seventh last year with a total of 66 points, eventual champion Louisiana Tech won with 194 points.

"We have 25 good opportunities to score points," Richburg said. "Last year we only had 14 or 15."
An area the Aggies look to score some solid points in is the javelin throw, with Senior Kelsey Brennan.

Brennan who also plays volleyball at NM State, competed once for the Aggies this season at the Texas Tech Open where she placed second with a throw of 41.66m (136'8"). That throw was good enough for sixth in the WAC for the entire season.  "Kelsey can give us a real plus with her abilities," Richburg said.

NM State also looks to have a good showing in the 4x100m relay where the foursome of Alishia Perkins, Leah Benton, LaSasha Aldredge, and Jndia Cleveland have the second fastest time in the WAC this year after running a blistering 45.91 at the Bobcat Invitational on April, 30th.

"As long as we don't make mistakes and compete like we know we can, we should do real well," Richburg said.

The action begins Tuesday, May 10th and goes through Friday, May 13th. The events will be held all day during all four days of competition
