NMSU Volleyball Sweeps WAC Opener vs Louisiana Tech
The New Mexico State volleyball team (11-4, 1-0 WAC) saw sophomore Stephanie Ziegler mark 10 kills and freshman Meredith Hays tally 12 kills as the Aggies swept Louisiana Tech (25-19, 25-20, 25-15) Saturday, Sept. 24 in the Pan American to start Western Athletic Conference play 1-0.
NM State outhit the Techsters .218-.148 and tallied a season-high nine service aces with senior Brynja Rodgers leading the way with three, while senior libero Kelsi Phillips added two. Phillips also led the way defensively with a match-high 15 digs.
The Aggies marked a team-total 42 kills on the evening with senior setter Jennah DeVries leading the offensive charge with 38 assists. Senior Michelle Kuester tallied a .364 hitting percentage on the evening with six kills on 11 attempts as fellow middle hitter Desiree Scott hit .714 with five kills on no errors.
"We did much better job of shot selection tonight," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Our serving was a bit tougher tonight and I am happy to start the WAC season with a win."
NM State fell behind 7-4 in set one but came back to win 25-19 before picking up a 25-20 win in set two. Set two was tied four times with the final tie of the set coming at 14-all. NM State went on a 4-1 run with Scott marking a kill to boost the Aggie lead and momentum.
The Aggies tired out the Techsters and hit .364 with only four errors. NM State jumped out to an early 7-1 lead before a kill by Scott and an ace by Rodgers put NM State up 11-3. La. Tech could not make the comeback as Scott wrapped up the set with a kill to win 25-15.
The Aggies continue WAC play with a match against Idaho, Sept. 24 at 7pm in the Pan American Center.
