NMSU Volleyball Sweeps Louisiana Tech, 3-0
Senior Jennah DeVries marked her 10th double-double of the season and freshman Meredith Hays tallied her ninth as the New Mexico State volleyball team swept (25-16, 25-14, 25-22) Louisiana Tech for the second time this season, Saturday, Oct. 22 in Ruston, La.
The Aggies go to 18-5 overall and 7-1 in Western Athletic Conference play as DeVries led the way with 29 assists and 14 digs, while Hays was the only player [from both teams] with double-digit kill figures as she posted 13 kills and 12 digs.
Senior libero Kelsi Phillips added 11 digs with six assists as NM State was out-blocked 8-7. Phillips, who currently ranks fourth in the WAC in digs per set, needs just 54 more digs to enter the top 10 in the Aggie record books for digs in a career.
NM State jumped out to a mediocre start in set one but a kill by Hays and another by senior Michelle Kuester gave the Aggies a 10-9 lead. The Aggies wouldn't look back from there going on a 15-7 run to win 25-16.
The Aggies jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the second set and didn't hold back on offense or defense as they outhit La. Tech .379-.088. Sophomore Stephanie Ziegler, who finished the night with eight kills and eight digs, led the way in set two posting four kills. The Aggies seemed to spread the ball around on offense as Hays, senior Kelsey Brennan and sophomore Desiree Scott tallied three kills each. Freshman Kiley Mansfield added two kills in the set.
Set three was a different story for the Aggies as they fell behind by seven points at 12-5. NM State battled back and got the ball to Brennan eight times while she hammered down six kills, with a big one to tie the set at 15 all. Although the block was there for La. Tech in the third set, as they finished with six, the offense could not produce and the Aggies battled back to win 25-22.
NM State heads remains on the road next week taking on Utah State in Logan, Utah and the Idaho Vandals in Moscow, Idaho.
